Hey guys,
I wanted to let you know that I’m going to start doing more on this blog, including showing you more of my creative process.
I’m also going to get a bit more personal with you all. Starting. Now.
According to family legend, my family is related to Robert Louis Stevenson, the author of Treasure Island, Kidnapped and Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde.
Creatives weave their way throughout my family tree. My Grandfather, Great Grandfather, Mom and Uncle were all artists. I guess you could say I come to this profession naturally.
So this pencil treasure chest is my ode to Robert.
Now on to some tips.
For this piece I used the Palomino Blackwing Pencil. If you don’t know about Blackwing pencils, now is the time to get on board. These pencils were first developed in the 1930’s and used by writers like John Steinbeck and Steven Sondheim and producers like Quincy jones. These pencils are very soft, a perfect weight and require about half the usual pressure to achieve your desired effect. Seriously check them out.
I use pencil when I want to do a lot of shadowing and/or need to do a piece that illustrates depth. Had a lot of fun working on this piece and using Blackwing Pencils.
I think Robert Louis Stevenson would have really liked these pencils.
